A coming of age comedy/drama for the post hip hop generation. Malcolm is a geek, carefully surviving life in The Bottoms, a tough neighborhood in Inglewood, CA filled gangsters and drugs dealers, while juggling his senior year of college applications, interviews and the SAT. His dream is to attend Harvard. A chance invitation to a big underground party leads Malcolm and his friends into a, only in Los Angeles, gritty adventure filed with offbeat characters and bad choices. If Malcolm can persevere, he'll go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.

Imagine how difficult life is for nerds. Now create a motley crew of a 90s fixation and sexual identity problems, put them in an inner city black school and surround them with hoodlums and drug dealers and you get a clever, inventive, and illuminating coming of age film.

The acting is wonderful, almost all of it coming from people you probably never heard of before, but surely will again. Props go to the three main characters, Kiersey Clemons, Tony Revolori, and Shameik Moore.

The writer-director is Rick Famuyiwa who began making films in 1996. This is his 5th film, for which he was nominated at Sundance for the Grand Jury Prize.

The music and photography are equally excellent, and the only real problems with the film are the attempt to jam too many subplots into one film and the overuse of coincidence.
